The Orc Life by Pom Koo
Aubergine Press welcomes Brussels-based artist Pom Koo and her latest unintended triumph, The Orc Life — a book containing orcs but without the annoying Frodo character.
Each page looks like a holy triptych, only this time vertical, endlessly rearangable and more RGB-ish. Picture Hieronymus Bosch, hunched over a 2009 white MacBook made of plastic, complaining about disk space while trying to export another batch of Deluxe Paint jpegs to send to his friend who's parents own a HP Color LaserJet CP1215. Like art history meets tech support.
Flip the pages “correctly,” and you follow a dreamy orc on a quest, accompanied by a spider that climbs ladders into holes that look like time portals. Flip them at random, and the book transforms into an abstract puzzle. Nonsensical, chaotic, but in the good sense.
